The stiff, powdery, metallic blue blades of Panicum virgatum 'Heavy metal' distinguish this native North American switch grass. They give the switch grass its distinctive swishing sound when moved by the breeze. Leaf tips turn burgundy in the fall. Green flowers bloom in late summer to mid fall. Flowers can grow to 5 ft tall, and are great for dried flower arrangements or cut flowers. Blades remain upright, providing strong vertical accent for plantings. Of interest late summer to winter.
