Gnom Male Sea Buckthorn is an ideal pollinator, recommended to pollinate 'Altaiskaya', 'Chuyskaya', and 'Inya'. It will pollinate several surrounding female varieties. 'Gnom' is distinguished by its high pollen productivity. Consequently, male seedlings in orchards do not exceed 5% ( = 1 male Gnom Sea buckthorn per 20 female sea buckthorns). Gnom is the smallest of the male sea buckthorn shrubs (max 8 ft tall), requiring less maintenance. It develops well in sunny areas. It tolerates a wide range of soils, but still prefers loose, light soil. It likes moderate watering without waterlogging. This early/mid-season male sea buckthorn features hardier flowers, which can withstand temperatures as low as -7°C, and are then less likely to be sensitive to early frost (the yellowish-white flowers do not turn to fruit). Sea Buckthorn plants are also a great addition to the garden as they capture atmospheric nitrogen, and redirect it into the ground. They are highly resilient to air pollution. Gnom Sea buckthorn is not afraid of pests and diseases. This cultivar is of Russian origin.
