Chuyskaya female Sea Buckthorn is the best variety, and the most widely cultivated in Russia and many other countries. It produces the largest fruits (0,9g per fruit or 90g/100 fruits). Its highest yield has been recorded in Russia (up to 18t/ha). Other sources record 12.7 to 14.2 t/ha after 7 years. Despite its fairly high acidity (1.7%), the fruit is mild with exceptional flavour (8.4/10). Its content is rather low in sugar (6.4%) and carotene (13.7mg/100g), but very high in vitamin C (134mg/100g) and oil (6.2%). Sea buckthorn berries contain higher vitamin E content than wheat and soya, and 3 times more vitamin A than carrots and high amounts of omega 7 and omega 3. Hippophae rhamnoides 'Chuyskaya' is recommended for food preparation and juices. The long peduncle of the fruit, its thornless characteristic and long harvest period make this variety ideal for hand picking. Orange berries and attractive greyish green foliage make this edible plant a beautiful landscape addition in the fall and winter months. Sea Buckthorn plants are also a great addition to the garden, as they catch atmospheric nitrogen and redirect into the ground. This cultivar is of Russian origin. Female plants require a male species nearby to produce fruit. Chuyskaya is an early bloomer, so 'Gnom' (early/mid-season); 'Lord' (early season); and eventually 'Pollmix' (mid-season) male Sea Buckthorns are recommended as pollinators. Typical orchards have 1 male for every 7 female plants.
